Helping pALS Stay Warm

I joined the guys of the Iowa Delta chapter of Phi Delta Theta on March 28th to make tie blankets for pALS in Polk County, Iowa! About 15 members of the fraternity joined me in Olmsted Center at Drake University. A few of the guys had picked up the blanket material the day before from Jo Ann Fabrics and Craft store in Clive. The material was perfect and the designs were appropriate for adults. The guys were very excited to start working on making the blankets. A few of them had never made tie blankets before, so I was able to help them. To make tie blankets, you take two large pieces of fabric that you can purchase at Jo Ann’s, Michael’s, etc. Typically one piece has a design and the other is a single color. You line up the pieces of fabric, cut strips into each side and tie those strips together. The guys were able to learn quickly and the making of the blankets quickly progressed!

While music played in the background, we tied blankets and discussed how we wanted to give these blankets to ALS warriors in Iowa. It will either be at an April support group hosted by the ALS Association Iowa Chapter or during home visits. A support group would allow the fraternity to meet pALS from the Des Moines area, but home visits would also give them a glimpse of assistive devices pALS use, others aspects of the disease, etc. Whatever we choose to do, I know pALS will still appreciate these blankets. We also started thinking of ideas for next semester. I am hoping to work with Phi Delta Theta to organize some sort of event for children of pALS in Iowa so that they can meet others their age in the same situation. It is just an idea for right now, but it could definitely happen. The guys were very speedy blanket tiers and finished before we knew it. In the end, 15 blankets were made and every single one looked absolutely wonderful.

We also had a few visitors while we were making the blankets – news reporters from the Des Moines Register and KCCI Iowa news. If you would like to read the article or watch the news report, please go to:

Thank you so much to the Phi Delts for coming together to make so many wonderful blankets! A huge thank you to the ALS Association Iowa Chapter, the Des Moines Register and KCCI news. I am very happy I did not give up on this idea and am super excited to give these blankets to Iowa pALS!
